Fuerteventura Travel Guide: The longest coastline in the Canaries

Fuerteventura’s golden beaches cover over 20% of the island and the turquoise waters are inviting throughout the year! There are plenty of sports and leisure activities along the coast to keep you entertained – from diving and kite surfing to dolphin-spotting and big-game fishing. Get in the driver’s seat to discover quiet villages and charming restaurants serving fresh fish and delicious local goat’s cheese.

The island has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO to preserve its rich marine life and diverse ecosystems. By car, visitors can drive from north to south in about three hours, but we recommend taking your time to enjoy the splendid scenery. Roads along the east coast are relatively flat, while coastal roads on the west offer spectacular views.

Visit the capital Puerto del Rosario for its plentiful shops and malls. The charming former capital Betancuria is located in a picturesque valley on the west coast and boasts some of the best restaurants on the island. Tindaya mountain was once a sacred place of worship by indigenous inhabitants. Today, it’s a great place for climbing, bird watching and wonderful views.

The most popular resorts include Corralejo and Morro Jable. Jandia is Fuerteventura’s southernmost peninsula and home to the island’s longest beaches, including beautiful Playa de Sotavento.

Travelling with kids? Visit Oasis Park on the south east coast – an entertaining animal park featuring performing sea lions and extensive botanical gardens. Baku Water Park in the north of the island is also a great day out. Perfect for a sunny beach holiday all year round, Fuerteventura’s pristine beaches and mesmerising sand dunes will keep you in the holiday mood.
